Bible Exhibition

What's in the Exhibition?

A Gutenberg Bible, ancient Greek papyri and an Hebrew Scroll are among the artefacts on show in Kettering as part of the touring Bible exhibition. The exhibition, which features a substantial collection of Bibles old and new, charts the history of the world's most famous book using videos, models and interactive computers. A couple of the panels trace the unique history of how we are able to read the Bible in modern English.

Comments from the Organisers

Many people were burned at the stake just so we could have a chance of reading this wonderful book.

We give an outline of the Bible message and its central character, Jesus Christ. Also we show some amazing prophecies, many of which have come to pass, and we are not talking about vague prophecies which could be made to fit anything. We are talking about specific prophecies which refer to specific nations and events which have come to pass against all probability or logic.

The very existence of the Jewish nation is powerful proof of prophecy. They lost their land almost 2000 years ago and have been scattered to all corners of the earth and have been hated by most nations. Yet in spite of that they have retained their national identity and have returned to their own land just as was prophecied in the Bible over 2000 years ago. There are many prophecies like this that have been fufilled and there are more which will yet be fulfilled, even in our lifetimes.

People often think that the Bible is just a mouldy old book, but it's historically accurate and very relevant to our lives today.

Who arranges the Exhibition?

The exhibition, organised by the Christadelphians, has been to all parts of the UK and Ireland and a replica is in use in the USA and Canada. This however is the first time it has been in Kettering for many years. It has recently been completely rebuilt, but its message like that of the Bible hasn't changed.

God the Creator

"By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth" (Psalm 33:6)

So by his word God made the universe, we can see his glory revealed in the way it is put together, from the vastness of distant galaxies to the detail of a living cell. The word of God to us is found in the Bible and it tells us of God's plan for the world and us.

The Word of God

"No prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." (I Peter 1:21)

The Bible was written by at least thirty-three different writers over a period of well over a thousand years. However, the Bible is one single, highly integrated book. It has a consistent message from beginning to end. This could only happen because the Bible is the word of God, written under the control of God. The Bible says that the scriptures are Inspired by God.

The Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek; and would have been inaccessible to the majority of people, were it not for the effort put into translating the Bible throughout the centuries. Translations of the Bible are called "versions?
One of the earliest of these, was into Latin (the language of the Roman Empire) and became the official Bible of the Roman Catholic church.

Before the invention of printing there were few translations from the Latin. About the time of the Reformation a number English translations were made. These could be printed cheaply and were distributed widely, and the Bible became accessible to almost everyone. The most famous of these versions was the Authorised Version (also called the King James Version) of 161 1, which is still in use today.

Recently there have been many new translations. All of them are witnesses to the same truth, and we can come face to face with that truth by reading them.

Israel - God's witnesses

"You are my witnesses, says the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen..." (Isaiah 43:10) Israel is a witness to God's word in what has happened to them through the ages. The Bible foretold that Israel would be scattered throughout the nations of the world (Deuteronomy 28), nonetheless Israel would continue to exist as a people (Jeremiah 30:11), that they would one day set up their nation again in the Holy Land (Isaiah 11 :11). These prophecies have been fulfilled to the last detail, a marvelous testimony to the truth of God's word.

Jesus Christ - Son of God

"...who was descended from David according to the flesh and declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 1:3,4)
Picture
Jesus claimed to be a prophet (Luke 13:33), the coming King of the Kingdom of God (John 19:21), the Son of God (John 10:36), and the only way to Life (John 11:25). Jesus is literally the son of God; he speaks the words of God, he performs the works of God, he reveals the person and purpose of God in ever. In the Bible phrase, Jesus is the word of God made flesh.
It is because of the death and resurrection of Jesus that our sins can be forgiven and we can have the hope of eternal life in the age to come.

Jesus Christ - Redeemer and King

"The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God." (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

In the Bible, God promises that he will one day send Jesus back to the earth to set up a reign of peace, justice and plenty covering the whole planet.

There are signs that the long-awaited return of Jesus is to be expected soon, probably in our lifetimes. These include the setting up of the modern state of Israel and the political alignment of the surrounding nations.

Our Need of God

The world needs God. Every year millions starve, and disease kills as many. Violent death from war and crime is present in most of the world. Even in the UK the terrorist, the mugger, the rapist and the vandal all thrive. Clear evidence that mankind cannot ensure his own peace and safety without the intervention of God.

We, as individuals, also need God. We are all subject to death, and without God we have no hope of life. The Bible describes death in these terms:

"For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing and they have no more reward,- but the memory of them is lost." (Ecclesiastes 9:5)

God's Love for us

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 For those who have faith in God through Jesus Christ, death is not the end. The day will come when Jesus returns and the dead will be raised to life; the process of transforming the world will begin and ultimately there will be an end to suffering and to death. All this is a sign of God's love for us, especially as it has only been made possible through the suffering and death of His Son.

Our Response

"Not every one who says to me 'Lord, Lord' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." (Matthew7:21) To be saved we must accept God's offer of life on HIS terms, which has four essential steps,
These are:

  • BELIEF-We must accept the word of God to us through Jesus.
  • REPENTANCE-We must be prepared to change our lives to fit in with the will of God.
  • BAPTISM - Biblical baptism is the burial of a believer in water so that he may be raised to new life.
  • A LIFE OF DEDICATION TO GOD-Faith leads to the dedication of ones life to following the will of God.
